Nature as a design material?

Just came back from DIY Biology workshop at DIS2012 in Newcastle. I am still not quite sure as to how to understand biology as a sketching/thinking material, but it sure was fun to experiment and meet all those cool people.
The picture above shows our work with Infected Textiles (top), Mud Battery (mid), feeding of mosquitos (bottom left) and feeding bacteria (bottom right).
